Important note on Jewelry:ABSOLUTELY NO Jewelry is allowed during play. This is a league insurance rule. (except for Medic Alert Bracelets). If you are going to get your childs ears pierced, please allow adequate time so the earrings can be removed before the soccer practice/game season begins.News/Notes For 2009:Thanks to our sponsors and a good deal I got on closeout soccer Jerseys, we were able to outfit all teams with Jerseys this year instead of T-Shirts. I also purchased some soccer hacky-sacks and Soccer ball notepads to give out to the younger kids during the season. I had enough soccer cards left over from the previous season to give out a box of those to each 1st/2nd Grade team as well. I got more socks for the 5th/8th grade teams and some teams got the "leftover" shorts from the previous year. I also purchased more new Size 3 and Size 4 balls so we should be set for the next couple of years in this area. Our numbers were down a bit this year due to a number of reasons and our older teams struggled to get wins for the most part, but hopefully everyone had a good season. There are a large number of options for Soccer and other fall sports for Weare and this spreads the talent thinly at times. Thanks to JSGFA football, who went out of their way to schedule away games around the MVSL jamboree date and give us access to the concessions stand and football field at the Bolton Field, we were able to host one of the end of season MVSL tournaments for the first time in a long while. News/Notes For 2008:Thanks to Mike Stafford, we now have a Pre-K program that was very well attended. We moved the 1st/2nd grade teams back to size 3 soccer balls from the larger size 4 balls they were previously using. Size 3 is more appropriate for their age group. This along with the Pre-K program meant we had to purchase a number of new size 3 balls. I found a decent ball on sale, with the only catch being the color was Pink! Nobody seemed to mind. The Pre-K and Kindergarten shared mostly Pink Balls. I mixed some old and new Pink/Non Pink balls for the 1st/2nd Graders.WAC had a very good response with respect to sponsorships this year so I was able to do a bit more than we have done in the past. If you know of someone who would be interested in sponsoring a team next year let me know! The Size 4 balls we are using are at least 8 years old, so I purchased some new Pink size 4 balls as well as size 3. These only went to the Girls teams however. The Girls teams made out this year as 3rd grade through 8th grade team members all got Pink Sack Packs compliments of WAC. Pink seemed to be on sale at Score Sports this year! The 3rd/4th Grade teams got Team Jerseys instead of T-Shirts, and also got matching White Soccer Shorts. Please thank your sponsors for their generosity as without their help this wouldn't have been possible. I also purchased "vintage" (read inexpensive) soccer cards for the 1st/2nd grade coaches to use as incentives, and some soccer World Cup Pins from 1994 for the 3rd/4th grade coaches to use for the same purpose. Some of the coaches went above and beyond and purchased additional things for their team members as well. The 5th-8th grade teams got matching socks for their Navy/Forest uniforms that they could keep at the end of the year. The uniforms seem to be holding up pretty well so far. I was able to purchase new Coach Jerseys for our coaches this year. I just didn't have the funds to do it last season. They also got whistles and soccer ball pumps. I purchased new soccer nets for our 6x12 nets (10 in all) for the 1st-4th graders, some more (closeout) Referee Jerseys, and a big roll of generic "velcro" to affix the nets to the goals. After much anguished thought, I also got some Soccer Goal wheels ($200 ugh..) to hopefully reduce the wear and tear on the new goals I purchased last season. We also go through around 20 cases of Field paint a year between the three fields, at $40 a case, this adds up! News/Notes For 2007:We opened up Bolton field for a 2nd 5th/6th grade field on the weekends (we still practice there during the weekdays.) This allowed our three boys and three Girls teams to play more home games. Previously with just one field (Ineson) for three teams, you couldn't get more than a third of our games at home. With an additional field open on Saturdays, the League (MVSL) is now able to schedule at least half of our games at home. For 2007 we refreshed the 5th-8th Grade Soccer Jerseys. This was a rather large expense (over $3000) when printing was taken into account. I'll need to get about 5 years out of them to cover the equivalent cost of T-Shirts, so please treat them carefully and please return them promptly to your coaches when the season is over. I think most everyone will agree that "we looook Marvelous, absolutely Marvelous". Note: The first person who e-mails the soccer director to tell me where that quote comes from gets WAC 2008 Soccer Medal! Another large expenditure was approx $1500 for a new set of 7x21 goals as one set we had was damaged during the season. We also purchased new soccer nets for the larger soccer goals, and the usual odds/ends like: new soccer mesh bag nets, tie wraps to keep the goals on, Goal Weights (Marble Chips wrapped in garbage bags with heavy duty Duct Tape) and Referee Jerseys for our referees. If anyone knows who "borrowed" the goal weights at Purington Field this spring, please let me know, as I had to replace them in 2008. Referees and Coaches Always NeededIf you are interested in refereeing Fall Soccer, please fill out a registration form (no fee required), with your contact information and check of "official" in the parental support/assistance section. High School students, this is a fun way to earn some spending money. E-mail the soccer director if you would like more information The Weare Athletic Club is always looking for coaches and referees. No experience is necessary; all you need is the right attitude and and a willingness to lend a hand. We can help you with advice, suggestions, and sample practice plans. A fabulous way to learn about coaching a refereeing is to attend a licensing clinic. The NHSA and USSF offer one-day and two-day coach and referee licensing clinics that can help both new and experienced volunteers.
